Encaustic on cradled board  (Pigmented bee’s wax), oil paint and graphite

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a wood surface and fused with a torch.  Successive layers, like veils of color, build up the surface to add depth and luminosity to the image.  Wax is added to oil paint and applied as details to sharpen the image.

Gay’s art uses a wide range of materials including oil paint, pastel, watercolor and encaustic. As an internationally exhibited artist and award-winning teacher, she brings a lifelong commitment to her practice of producing original work which marries narrative content to expressive, gestural painting. Gay teaches both group and private classes in drawing, painting and encaustic in her sunny Whiting Mills studio.
